IELTS daily: Treat Not Given as “the text never says”

True matches the text. False contradicts it. Not Given means you cannot prove it from the passage.

A statement is false when the passage says the opposite. It is not given when the passage is silent, even if the idea sounds likely.

Your own knowledge of the topic does not count. Only the passage counts.

When you hesitate between false and not given, look for a sentence that directly conflicts. If there is none, choose not given.

  • Find the sentence the statement comes from.
  • Mark it true only if that sentence supports it.
  • If the sentence is missing, choose not given.
