IELTS daily: Put the overview before the details
Academic Writing Task 1 needs an overview of the main change or the largest figure. Lists of numbers are not an overview.
Look at the chart and say what happened overall: something rose, something fell, or one category was much larger. That sentence is the overview.
Then choose two or three figures that support it. You do not need every number on the graph.
Do not invent a reason the chart does not give. Describe what is there.
- Write the overview in one sentence.
- Add the highest and lowest figures.
- Stop. A short clear report is stronger than a full data dump.
