IELTS daily: Predict the kind of word before Listening plays

A gap that follows “in” is often a place or a year. Predicting the type makes the answer easier to catch.

Before the recording, read the sentence with the gap and decide whether you need a name, a number, a noun, or a date.

Write what you hear, then check the grammar. A singular noun after “many” is a sign you missed the ending.

You usually hear the answer once. Guessing a synonym you prefer is riskier than the word that was said.

  • Underline the word before each gap.
  • Note “number”, “name”, or “noun” in the margin.
  • After the section, check plural endings and spelling.
